Chapter 18 · Mokṣa Sanyāsa Yoga

मोक्षसंन्यासयोग
78 verses

The Yoga of Liberation through Renunciation — the final, longest chapter and the Gita's grand synthesis. Renunciation means abandoning desire-motivated actions; Tyaga means abandoning attachment to the fruits of all actions. The five causes of all actions are listed. The three types of knowledge, action, doer, intellect, fortitude, and happiness are described through the three Gunas. Then comes the Gita's most direct statement: 'Abandon all varieties of dharma and surrender unto me alone — I will liberate you from all sins; do not grieve.' (18.66 — considered the Gita's supreme verse, the Charama Shloka). The Gita closes with Arjuna: 'My delusion is destroyed. I have regained my memory through your grace. I am firm. My doubts are gone. I will act according to your word.'
