The Book of the Hermitage. The aging Dhritarashtra, Gandhari, and Kunti retire to the Himalayan forest with Vidura. Vidura, extremely emaciated from austerities, merges his soul into Yudhishthira's body (he was always Dharma itself). The three elderly royals — Dhritarashtra, Gandhari, Kunti — perish in a forest fire that Narada describes as their chosen liberation. Vyasa shows the Pandavas a vision of the dead.
ಆಶ್ರಮವಾಸದ ಗ್ರಂಥ. ವೃದ್ಧ ಧೃತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ, ಗಾಂಧಾರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಕುಂತಿ ವಿದುರನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹಿಮಾಲಯದ ಅರಣ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳಿದ್ದು. ತಪಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಕೃಶನಾದ ವಿದುರ ತನ್ನ ಆತ್ಮವನ್ನು ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಲೀನಗೊಳಿಸಿದ್ದು — ಅವನು ಸದಾ ಧರ್ಮವೇ ಆಗಿದ್ದನು. ಮೂವರು ಹಿರಿಯರೂ ಕಾಡ್ಗಿಚ್ಚಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಕ್ತಿ ಪಡೆದದ್ದು. ವ್ಯಾಸರು ಪಾಂಡವರಿಗೆ ಮೃತರ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದ್ದು.
