Born as princess Amba in a previous life — wronged by Bhishma and reborn specifically to avenge that wrong. Born female in Panchala, raised as a male warrior by King Drupada. Bhishma refused to shoot one born female.
Princess Amba of Kashi loved King Shalva. Bhishma abducted her for his half-brother's marriage. When Shalva rejected the 'abducted' Amba, she returned to demand Bhishma marry her — he refused (celibacy vow). She sought warriors to fight Bhishma; none could win. Even Parashurama fought Bhishma to a standstill. Amba immolated herself vowing rebirth as Bhishma's killer. She was reborn as Shikhandi in King Drupada's family.
Arjuna placed Shikhandi's chariot before his own on Day 10. Bhishma — his code absolute: never shoot at one born female — dropped his bow. From behind Shikhandi, Arjuna shot his grandfather with arrow after arrow. Bhishma fell, his body held aloft by the arrows — a porcupine of shafts. Bhishma himself said he recognized the arrangement and accepted it as dharmic.
ಹಿಂದಿನ ಜನ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂಬೆ. ಭೀಷ್ಮನಿಂದ ಆದ ಅನ್ಯಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇಡು ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲೆಂದೇ ಮರುಜನ್ಮ ಪಡೆದವಳು. ಸ್ತ್ರೀಯಾಗಿ ಜನಿಸಿ ಪುರುಷನಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟವಳು.
ಕಾಶಿರಾಜಕುಮಾರಿ ಅಂಬೆ ಶಾಲ್ವನನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಿದ್ದಳು. ಭೀಷ್ಮ ಅವಳನ್ನು ಅಪಹರಿಸಿದನು. ಶಾಲ್ವ 'ಅಪಹೃತಳಾದವಳನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸೆ' ಎಂದನು. ಭೀಷ್ಮ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚರ್ಯ ವ್ರತದ ಕಾರಣ ನಿರಾಕರಿಸಿದನು. ಎಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ತಿರಸ್ಕೃತಳಾದ ಅಂಬೆ ಅಗ್ನಿಪ್ರವೇಶ ಮಾಡಿ 'ಭೀಷ್ಮನ ಸಾವಿಗೆ ನಾನೇ ಕಾರಣಳಾಗುವೆ' ಎಂದು ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆ ಮಾಡಿದಳು.
ಹತ್ತನೆಯ ದಿನ ಅರ್ಜುನ ಶಿಖಂಡಿಯ ರಥವನ್ನು ಮುಂದಿಟ್ಟನು. 'ಸ್ತ್ರೀಯಾಗಿ ಜನಿಸಿದವರ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಾಣ ಹೂಡೆ' ಎಂಬ ತನ್ನ ವ್ರತಕ್ಕೆ ಬದ್ಧನಾಗಿ ಭೀಷ್ಮ ಬಿಲ್ಲು ಕೆಳಗಿಟ್ಟನು. ಶಿಖಂಡಿಯ ಮರೆಯಿಂದ ಅರ್ಜುನನ ಬಾಣಗಳು ಪಿತಾಮಹನನ್ನು ತೂರಿದವು.
