Eldest of the five Pandavas, son of Dharma (Yama). Renowned for his unshakeable commitment to truth — yet his fatal weakness for dice gambling set the entire catastrophe in motion.
Yudhishthira, known as Dharmaraja ('King of Dharma'), never uttered a deliberate lie in his life — except once, when he said 'Ashwatthama is dead' (referring to an elephant, not Drona's son) to break Drona's fighting spirit. Even this half-truth caused his chariot (which had floated above the ground due to his righteousness) to touch the earth.
Shakuni engineered an invitation to dice. Yudhishthira knew it was a trap — but kshatriya code forbade refusing. He lost his army, his kingdom, his brothers, himself, and finally Draupadi. Each loss was a failure of both weakness and code-bound honor. This single event set five million soldiers to their deaths.
Crowned Emperor of Hastinapur, he performed the Ashwamedha sacrifice (horse sacrifice, spanning a year) to cleanse war-guilt. He ruled wisely for decades. On the final journey to the Himalayas, he was the only human to reach Svarga (heaven) in his mortal body — accompanied by a dog who was Dharma (Yama) in disguise, testing his loyalty.
ಪಂಚಪಾಂಡವರಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿರಿಯನು. ಧರ್ಮದೇವತೆಯ ಮಗ. ಸತ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಧರ್ಮದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಚಲ ನಿಷ್ಠೆ ಇದ್ದವನು — ಆದರೆ ಜೂಜಿನ ವ್ಯಸನವೇ ಇಡೀ ಮಹಾವಿನಾಶಕ್ಕೆ ಬೀಜ ಬಿತ್ತಿತು.
ಧರ್ಮರಾಜನೆಂದೇ ಹೆಸರಾದವನು ಜೀವಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೇ ಒಂದು ಬಾರಿ ಅರ್ಧಸತ್ಯ ನುಡಿದನು — 'ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥಾಮ ಹತಃ' ಎಂದು. ಆ ಒಂದು ಮಾತಿಗೇ, ಸತ್ಯದ ಬಲದಿಂದ ನೆಲದಿಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ತೇಲುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅವನ ರಥ ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ತಾಕಿತು.
ಶಕುನಿಯ ಆಹ್ವಾನ ಬಲೆಯೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದಿದ್ದರೂ ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯಧರ್ಮ ನಿರಾಕರಿಸಲು ಬಿಡಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಭಂಡಾರ, ಸೈನ್ಯ, ರಾಜ್ಯ, ತಮ್ಮಂದಿರು, ತಾನೇ — ಕೊನೆಗೆ ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯನ್ನೂ ಸೋತನು. ಈ ಒಂದೇ ಘಟನೆ ನಲವತ್ತು ಲಕ್ಷ ಜೀವಗಳನ್ನು ಬಲಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಿತು.
ಹಸ್ತಿನಾಪುರದ ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಪಟ್ಟಾಭಿಷಿಕ್ತನಾದನು. ಯುದ್ಧದ ಪಾಪ ತೊಳೆಯಲು ಅಶ್ವಮೇಧ ಯಾಗ ಮಾಡಿದನು. ಮಹಾಪ್ರಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಸಶರೀರವಾಗಿ ತಲುಪಿದ ಏಕೈಕ ಮನುಷ್ಯ — ಜೊತೆಗಿದ್ದ ನಾಯಿ ಸ್ವತಃ ಧರ್ಮದೇವತೆಯೇ ಆಗಿತ್ತು.
