Chaturthi is lunar day 4 of each fortnight (in both the waxing Shukla and waning Krishna paksha). A tithi is a lunar "day" — the time the Moon takes to move 12° further from the Sun. This page covers its presiding deity, meaning, mythology and traditional observances.

Meaning & mythology

Ganesha's tithi. Vinayaka Chaturthi (Shukla) celebrates his birth; Sankashti (Krishna) is a moonrise-fast for removing obstacles. The Ganesha Purana ties his worship to the visible rising moon.

Observances & practice

Ganesha puja with durva and modaka; Sankashti fasters break fast only after moonrise.

ಗಣೇಶನ ತಿಥಿ. ವಿನಾಯಕ ಚೌತಿ (ಶುಕ್ಲ) ಜನ್ಮೋತ್ಸವ; ಸಂಕಷ್ಟ ಚತುರ್ಥಿ (ಕೃಷ್ಣ) ಚಂದ್ರೋದಯ ವ್ರತ. ಗಣೇಶ ಪುರಾಣ ಪೂಜೆಯನ್ನು ಉದಯಿಸುವ ಚಂದ್ರನಿಗೆ ಜೋಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಆಚರಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪದ್ಧತಿ: ದೂರ್ವಾ–ಮೋದಕಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಗಣೇಶ ಪೂಜೆ; ಸಂಕಷ್ಟ ವ್ರತಿಗಳು ಚಂದ್ರೋದಯದ ನಂತರವೇ ಪಾರಣೆ.
