Son of Arjuna and Subhadra, nephew of Krishna. At only 16, he entered the impenetrable Chakravyuha formation — knowing how to enter but not exit — and fought 6 great warriors before falling.
Subhadra was pregnant with Abhimanyu when Arjuna described the technique for entering the Chakravyuha (spiral military formation). Subhadra fell asleep before he could explain the exit. Abhimanyu thus learned entry but not escape — a detail that became fatal. This is one of mythology's most poignant examples of incomplete knowledge.
Drona arranged the spiral formation that only Krishna and Arjuna knew how to break. Arjuna was diverted by Susharma. Abhimanyu volunteered to enter. He fought with extraordinary brilliance, destroying Kaurava warriors by the thousands. Gradually, six great commanders — Drona, Karna, Kripacharya, Kritavarma, Ashwatthama, and Shalya — simultaneously attacked him from all sides: a war-code violation. His bow was broken, his chariot destroyed, his horses killed. He fought with a chariot wheel, then on foot, until he fell.
Abhimanyu's son Parikshit (born after the war, revived by Krishna from Ashwatthama's Brahmastra) became the sole surviving heir of the Pandava lineage and the last great king before the Kali Yuga. The entire Mahabharata is narrated as Vyasa's story told at Parikshit's grandson Janamejaya's court.
