Son of Drona and Kripi, born with a divine gem in his forehead granting immortality. After his father's death, he committed the most atrocious act of the war — and was cursed to wander earth forever.
On the night after the war ended, Ashwatthama — consumed by grief over his father's dishonorable death — crept into the Pandava camp with Kripacharya and Kritavarma. He killed all five sons of Draupadi (Upapandavas) by mistake (thinking them the Pandavas sleeping). He killed Dhrishtadyumna with his bare hands. He released the Narayanastra against the army. The Pandavas themselves survived by chance.
Cornered and furious, Ashwatthama released the Brahmastra — a weapon capable of ending the world — at the Pandavas. Arjuna countered with his own Brahmastra. Vyasa and Narada intervened and ordered both withdrawn. Arjuna withdrew his. Ashwatthama could not withdraw his — he had lost that power (Parashurama's teaching limitation). He redirected it at Uttara's womb — killing the unborn Parikshit, last Pandava heir. Krishna revived the child.
For the attack on a pregnant woman and unborn child — the ultimate violation of warrior code — Krishna cursed Ashwatthama: 'You will wander the earth for 3,000 years, alone, without conversation, bearing wounds that never heal, covered in sores oozing blood and pus.' He ripped the jewel from Ashwatthama's forehead — leaving a gaping wound. According to tradition, Ashwatthama still walks the forests of India, immortal and agonized.
ದ್ರೋಣ ಮತ್ತು ಕೃಪಿಯ ಮಗ. ಹಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದಿವ್ಯಮಣಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಜನಿಸಿದ ಚಿರಂಜೀವಿ. ತಂದೆಯ ಮರಣದ ನಂತರ ಯುದ್ಧದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಘೋರ ಕೃತ್ಯವನ್ನೆಸಗಿ ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಶಾಪಕ್ಕೆ ಗುರಿಯಾದನು.
ಯುದ್ಧ ಮುಗಿದ ರಾತ್ರಿ, ತಂದೆಯ ಅಪಮಾನಕರ ಮರಣದ ಸೇಡಿನಿಂದ ಉರಿದು, ಕೃಪ ಮತ್ತು ಕೃತವರ್ಮನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪಾಂಡವ ಶಿಬಿರವನ್ನು ಹೊಕ್ಕನು. ನಿದ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯ ಐವರು ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನೂ ಪಾಂಡವರೆಂದು ಭ್ರಮಿಸಿ ಕೊಂದನು. ಧೃಷ್ಟದ್ಯುಮ್ನನನ್ನು ಬರಿಗೈಯಲ್ಲೇ ಕೊಂದನು.
ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಪ್ರಯೋಗಿಸಿದನು. ಅರ್ಜುನನೂ ಪ್ರತಿಯಸ್ತ್ರ ಬಿಟ್ಟನು. ವ್ಯಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ನಾರದರು ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಬಂದು ಹಿಂಪಡೆಯಲು ಆಜ್ಞಾಪಿಸಿದರು. ಅರ್ಜುನ ಹಿಂಪಡೆದನು; ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥಾಮನಿಗೆ ಆ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವನು ಅಸ್ತ್ರವನ್ನು ಉತ್ತರೆಯ ಗರ್ಭದತ್ತ ತಿರುಗಿಸಿದನು — ಪಾಂಡವರ ಕೊನೆಯ ವಂಶಾಂಕುರ ಪರೀಕ್ಷಿತನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದನು. ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಆ ಶಿಶುವಿಗೆ ಮರುಜೀವ ನೀಡಿದನು.
ಗರ್ಭಿಣಿ ಮತ್ತು ಹುಟ್ಟದ ಶಿಶುವಿನ ಮೇಲಿನ ಈ ಆಕ್ರಮಣಕ್ಕೆ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಶಾಪವಿತ್ತನು — 'ಮೂರು ಸಾವಿರ ವರ್ಷ ಒಬ್ಬಂಟಿಯಾಗಿ, ಯಾರೊಡನೆಯೂ ಮಾತನಾಡಲಾಗದೆ, ಎಂದೂ ಮಾಯದ ಕೀವು ಸೋರುವ ಗಾಯಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲೆದಾಡು.' ಹಣೆಯ ಮಣಿಯನ್ನು ಕಿತ್ತು ತೆಗೆದನು.
