The story

The Elopement

Balarama had already promised Subhadra to Duryodhana. Krishna — knowing Subhadra loved Arjuna — told Arjuna to abduct her openly (a recognized kshatriya form of marriage). At her svayamvara ceremony, Arjuna arrived disguised as a sanyasi (ascetic) and swept her away in his chariot. Crucially, Subhadra herself took the reins — proving her enthusiastic participation.

Role in the Epic

Subhadra's most significant contribution was bearing Abhimanyu — the bridge between Pandava and Yadava royal lines whose son Parikshit continued humanity's story. After Abhimanyu's death, Subhadra's grief is one of the most moving passages of the Stri Parva.
