Born Devavrata, son of King Shantanu and goddess Ganga. Took the most terrible vow in epic history — lifelong celibacy and renouncement of the throne — to secure his father's marriage.
When Shantanu fell in love with Satyavati, a fisherwoman, her father demanded her sons inherit the throne. Devavrata, crown prince, agreed. But to eliminate all doubt — he also publicly vowed permanent celibacy, that he would never father a child who could claim the throne. The vow was so terrible ('bhishma' means terrible/dreadful) it gave him his new name. The gods themselves rained flowers.
Bhishma was arguably the greatest warrior alive for most of the epic. Even Parashurama — who had defeated all kshatriyas on earth — fought him to a 23-day standstill before divine intervention stopped them. He had the boon of Iccha Mrityu — death only when he chose it.
On Day 10, with Shikhandi placed before Arjuna, Bhishma dropped his bow — he would not shoot at one born female. Arjuna's arrows pierced him from behind Shikhandi. He fell but did not die — he lay on a bed of arrows for 58 days, awaiting the auspicious Uttarayan (winter solstice). During this time, he delivered the epic's greatest teachings: Shanti Parva (14,732 verses on dharma and statecraft) and Anushasana Parva (8,000 verses) and the Vishnu Sahasranama.
ಶಂತನು ಮಹಾರಾಜ ಮತ್ತು ಗಂಗಾದೇವಿಯ ಮಗ ದೇವವ್ರತ. ತಂದೆಯ ಮದುವೆಗಾಗಿ ಆಜೀವ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಸಿಂಹಾಸನ ತ್ಯಾಗದ ಭೀಕರ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆ ಮಾಡಿದವನು.
ಶಂತನು ಸತ್ಯವತಿಯನ್ನು ಮೋಹಿಸಿದಾಗ, ಅವಳ ತಂದೆ 'ಅವಳ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೇ ಸಿಂಹಾಸನ' ಎಂಬ ಷರತ್ತು ಹಾಕಿದನು. ಯುವರಾಜ ದೇವವ್ರತ ಒಪ್ಪಿದನು. ಸಂಶಯವೇ ಉಳಿಯದಂತೆ ಆಜೀವ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚರ್ಯದ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆಯನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡಿದನು. ಆ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಭೀಕರವಾಗಿತ್ತೆಂದರೆ ದೇವತೆಗಳೇ ಪುಷ್ಪವೃಷ್ಟಿ ಸುರಿಸಿದರು — ಅಂದಿನಿಂದ ಅವನು 'ಭೀಷ್ಮ'.
ಭೂಮಿಯ ಸಮಸ್ತ ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯರನ್ನು ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತೊಂದು ಬಾರಿ ಸೋಲಿಸಿದ್ದ ಪರಶುರಾಮರೊಡನೆಯೇ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತಮೂರು ದಿನ ಸಮಬಲದಿಂದ ಹೋರಾಡಿದನು. ಇಚ್ಛಾಮರಣದ ವರ ಪಡೆದವನು — ತಾನು ಬಯಸಿದಾಗ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸಾವು.
ಹತ್ತನೆಯ ದಿನ ಶಿಖಂಡಿಯನ್ನು ಮುಂದಿಟ್ಟಾಗ ಬಿಲ್ಲು ಕೆಳಗಿಟ್ಟನು. ಬಾಣಗಳ ಹಾಸಿಗೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಐವತ್ತೆಂಟು ದಿನ ಮಲಗಿ ಉತ್ತರಾಯಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕಾದನು. ಆ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಂತಿಪರ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ಅನುಶಾಸನ ಪರ್ವಗಳ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತೆರಡು ಸಾವಿರ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳನ್ನೂ, ವಿಷ್ಣುಸಹಸ್ರನಾಮವನ್ನೂ ಉಪದೇಶಿಸಿದನು.
