Eldest of the 100 Kaurava princes, son of blind king Dhritarashtra. His envy of the Pandavas and refusal to share the kingdom set 18 million lives on the path to death.
Duryodhana had genuine virtues: fierce loyalty to Karna (whom he crowned king when others scorned him), personal courage, generosity, and total commitment to his principles. He never wavered — even on the last day, bleeding on the ground, he said: 'I lived as a king. I die as a king. What more can a man want?' His tragedy is the tragedy of pride without wisdom.
Duryodhana could not accept Yudhishthira's prosperity in Indraprastha. When he visited and mistook a crystal floor for a pool (stumbling), Draupadi and the Pandavas laughed — 'The blind man's son is also blind.' This humiliation curdled into the poison that killed five million people. He told Krishna: 'I will not give land the size of a needle's point.'
After all his brothers fell, Duryodhana retreated into the Dvaipayana lake, using a magical breathing technique. The Pandavas taunted him out. He chose to fight Bhima with maces. His technique was flawless — but Bhima struck below the waist (an illegal blow). Dying, Duryodhana called Bhima adharmic. Krishna replied: had Bhima fought fair, Duryodhana — with his iron-hardened thighs (Gandhari's gaze) — would have won.
ನೂರು ಕೌರವರಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿರಿಯನು. ಅಂಧ ಧೃತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರನ ಮಗ. ಪಾಂಡವರ ಮೇಲಿನ ಅಸೂಯೆ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಜ್ಯ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ನಿರಾಕರಣೆ — ಇವೇ ನಲವತ್ತು ಲಕ್ಷ ಜೀವಗಳ ಬಲಿಗೆ ದಾರಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟವು.
ದುರ್ಯೋಧನನಿಗೆ ನಿಜವಾದ ಸದ್ಗುಣಗಳಿದ್ದವು — ಜಗತ್ತೇ ಕರ್ಣನನ್ನು ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸಿದಾಗ ಅವನನ್ನು ರಾಜನನ್ನಾಗಿಸಿದ ನಿಷ್ಠೆ, ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಶೌರ್ಯ, ಔದಾರ್ಯ. ತನ್ನ ನಿರ್ಧಾರದಿಂದ ಎಂದೂ ಹಿಂಜರಿಯಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಕೊನೆಯ ದಿನ ರಕ್ತದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿದ್ದಿದ್ದಾಗಲೂ ಹೇಳಿದನು — 'ರಾಜನಾಗಿ ಬದುಕಿದೆ, ರಾಜನಾಗಿ ಸಾಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಇನ್ನೇನು ಬೇಕು?' ಜ್ಞಾನವಿಲ್ಲದ ಅಹಂಕಾರದ ದುರಂತ ಅವನದು.
ಇಂದ್ರಪ್ರಸ್ಥದ ಮಯಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಫಟಿಕದ ನೆಲವನ್ನು ನೀರೆಂದು ಭ್ರಮಿಸಿ ಬಿದ್ದಾಗ ದ್ರೌಪದಿ ನಕ್ಕಳು — 'ಕುರುಡನ ಮಗ ಕುರುಡನೇ.' ಆ ಅವಮಾನವೇ ವಿಷವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಯಿತು. ಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದನು — 'ಸೂಜಿಯ ಮೊನೆಯಷ್ಟು ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನೂ ಯುದ್ಧವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಕೊಡೆನು.'
ಎಲ್ಲ ತಮ್ಮಂದಿರೂ ಸತ್ತ ಮೇಲೆ ದ್ವೈಪಾಯನ ಸರೋವರದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಡಗಿದನು. ಸವಾಲಿಗೆ ಹೊರಬಂದು ಭೀಮನೊಡನೆ ಗದಾಯುದ್ಧ ಮಾಡಿದನು. ಅವನ ಕೌಶಲ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಾಗಿತ್ತು — ಆದರೆ ಭೀಮ ಸೊಂಟದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಹೊಡೆದನು. 'ಇದು ಅಧರ್ಮ' ಎಂದು ಸಾಯುತ್ತಾ ಕೂಗಿದನು.
