Born of Kunti and the Sun god Surya before her marriage, abandoned in a basket on the Ganga, raised by a charioteer. The greatest warrior of his age — cursed, deceived, betrayed by fate, yet noble to the end.
Kunti received a boon from sage Durvasa to summon any god. Curiously, she tested it by calling Surya (Sun god), who gifted her a glowing, armor-clad infant. Terrified of social stigma as an unwed mother, she placed the baby in a waterproof box and set it on the Ganga. Fisherman-charioteer Adhiratha found him — his wife Radha nursed him. He was named Vasusena, later called Karna (for the earrings he wore) and Radheya (son of Radha).
(1) Dronacharya refused to teach him advanced weapons (low-caste). (2) He studied under Parashurama disguised as a brahmin — when discovered, Parashurama cursed him: 'Your supreme brahmastra knowledge will fail you at the moment of greatest need.' (3) A brahmin cursed him that his chariot wheel would sink in earth during his most crucial battle — both fulfilled on Day 17 when Arjuna killed him.
Born with divine armor (kavacha) and golden earrings (kundala) fused to his skin — gifts from Surya making him effectively invincible. Indra (Arjuna's divine father) came disguised as a brahmin beggar and asked Karna for these as charity. Karna knew it was a trick. He cut them from his living body and gave them away — because his dharma of giving (dana) could not be broken, even for his life.
On Day 17, Karna's chariot wheel sank in earth (the brahmin's curse). He stepped down to free it — his Brahmastra knowledge failed him (Parashurama's curse). Arjuna hesitated to shoot an unarmed man. Krishna reminded Arjuna of every injustice Karna had supported — Draupadi's humiliation, Abhimanyu's death. Arjuna shot. Karna died — perhaps the epic's most morally complex death.
