Princess of Gandhara, wife of blind King Dhritarashtra. Out of devotion, she permanently blindfolded herself, accumulating extraordinary spiritual power — and ultimately cursed Krishna for the war.
When Gandhari learned she was to marry the blind Dhritarashtra, she bound her own eyes with cloth, permanently — reasoning she would share her husband's darkness. Over 40 years, this voluntary sacrifice accumulated immense tapas (spiritual energy), making her one of the most powerful people in the epic.
Gandhari was pregnant for two years with no delivery. Frustrated, she struck her womb hard. Vyasa intervened — she delivered a lump of flesh. Vyasa divided it into 101 pots (100 sons + 1 daughter Duhshala). The sons emerged gradually over two years, Duryodhana first.
Before Duryodhana's final mace fight with Bhima, Gandhari removed her blindfold to look at her son — her 40 years of compressed tapas made anything her gaze touched as hard as iron. Krishna, suspecting this, told Duryodhana to cover his body with plantain leaves. Duryodhana arrived wearing only leaves below the waist (shame at being seen by his mother). Her gaze made his torso invulnerable — but his thighs remained mortal. Bhima's blow found them.
After the war, Gandhari — in her inconsolable grief at 100 sons dead — cursed Krishna: 'As my sons died fighting each other, so shall your Yadava clan destroy itself.' Krishna accepted the curse calmly. 36 years later, it was fulfilled exactly.
ಗಾಂಧಾರದ ರಾಜಕುಮಾರಿ. ಅಂಧ ಪತಿಗೆ ಸಮನಾಗಿರಲು ಜೀವಮಾನವಿಡೀ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡವಳು — ಆ ತ್ಯಾಗದಿಂದಲೇ ಅಪಾರ ತಪಃಶಕ್ತಿ ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಿದವಳು.
ಅಂಧ ಧೃತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರನಿಗೆ ಮದುವೆಯಾಗಬೇಕೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದಾಗ, ಪತಿಗೆ ಕಾಣದ ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನು ತಾನೂ ನೋಡಲಾರೆನೆಂದು ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾಗಿ ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡಳು. ನಲವತ್ತು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಈ ಸ್ವಯಂತ್ಯಾಗ ಅಪಾರ ತಪಃಶಕ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಸಂಚಯವಾಯಿತು.
ಎರಡು ವರ್ಷ ಗರ್ಭ ಧರಿಸಿಯೂ ಪ್ರಸವವಾಗದಿದ್ದಾಗ ಹತಾಶೆಯಿಂದ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಗೆ ಹೊಡೆದುಕೊಂಡಳು. ಮಾಂಸಪಿಂಡ ಹೊರಬಂದಿತು. ವ್ಯಾಸರು ಅದನ್ನು ನೂರೊಂದು ಭಾಗ ಮಾಡಿ ಕುಂಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟರು — ನೂರು ಗಂಡು, ಒಬ್ಬಳು ಮಗಳು ದುಶ್ಶಲೆ.
ಗದಾಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ ಮುನ್ನ ಮಗನನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು ಪಟ್ಟಿ ತೆಗೆದಳು. ನಲವತ್ತು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ತಪಃಶಕ್ತಿ ತುಂಬಿದ ಆ ದೃಷ್ಟಿ ಬಿದ್ದಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲಾ ವಜ್ರಕಠಿಣವಾಯಿತು. ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಸಲಹೆಯಂತೆ ಬಾಳೆಎಲೆ ಸುತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದ ದುರ್ಯೋಧನನ ತೊಡೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಮೃದುವಾಗಿ ಉಳಿಯಿತು.
ನೂರು ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನೂ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡ ದುಃಖದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗೆ ಶಾಪವಿತ್ತಳು — 'ನನ್ನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಹೊಡೆದಾಡಿ ಸತ್ತಂತೆ, ನಿನ್ನ ಯಾದವಕುಲವೂ ತನ್ನನ್ನೇ ನಾಶ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಿ.' ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಶಾಂತವಾಗಿ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದನು. ಮೂವತ್ತಾರು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ನಂತರ ಅದು ಅಕ್ಷರಶಃ ನಡೆಯಿತು.
