Half-brother of Dhritarashtra and Pandu, born of a maid servant. Considered the wisest man of his age and an incarnation of Dharma himself. His Vidura Niti remains a masterwork of statecraft.
When Vyasa came to father heirs on Satyavati's daughters-in-law: Ambika closed her eyes (Dhritarashtra, blind), Ambalika turned pale (Pandu, pale). On the third visit, Ambika sent her maid — who received Vyasa calmly and happily. The maid's son Vidura was born with total wisdom, a perfect constitution, and an innate grasp of dharma, being an incarnation of Dharma/Yama himself (placed there due to a curse).
Vidura's extended counsel to Dhritarashtra in the Udyoga Parva — known as Vidura Niti — is one of the greatest texts on statecraft, leadership, ethics, and human psychology ever written. He describes what makes a wise king, the signs of good and bad counsel, the nature of true friendship, and the meaning of happiness. Dhritarashtra heard it all and ignored it.
When Duryodhana secretly built the House of Lac (Lakshagraha) — a beautiful but highly flammable palace — to burn the Pandavas, Vidura secretly warned Yudhishthira using a coded dialect only Yudhishthira understood. He arranged for a tunnel to be dug. The Pandavas escaped on the night of the fire while a woman and her five sons (who had passed out from drinking) died instead. Duryodhana believed the Pandavas dead.
ಧೃತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾಂಡುವಿನ ಮಲಸಹೋದರ. ದಾಸಿಯ ಮಗನಾಗಿ ಜನಿಸಿದರೂ ತನ್ನ ಕಾಲದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಜ್ಞಾನಿ. ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ ಧರ್ಮದೇವತೆಯ ಅವತಾರವೆಂದೇ ಪರಿಗಣಿತನು.
ವ್ಯಾಸರು ನಿಯೋಗಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ಅಂಬಿಕೆ ಕಣ್ಣುಮುಚ್ಚಿದಳು — ಅಂಧ ಧೃತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ. ಅಂಬಾಲಿಕೆ ಬಿಳಿಚಿಕೊಂಡಳು — ಪಾಂಡುರೋಗಿ ಪಾಂಡು. ಮೂರನೆಯ ಬಾರಿ ದಾಸಿಯೊಬ್ಬಳು ಶಾಂತವಾಗಿ, ಸಂತೋಷದಿಂದ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದಳು — ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ಜ್ಞಾನಿ ವಿದುರ ಜನಿಸಿದನು.
ಉದ್ಯೋಗ ಪರ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಧೃತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರನಿಗೆ ವಿದುರ ಹೇಳಿದ ಉಪದೇಶವೇ 'ವಿದುರ ನೀತಿ' — ರಾಜನೀತಿ, ನಾಯಕತ್ವ, ನೀತಿಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾನವ ಮನೋವಿಜ್ಞಾನದ ಬಗೆಗಿನ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಗ್ರಂಥ. ಧೃತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಕೇಳಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಏನನ್ನೂ ಪಾಲಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ.
ಲಾಕ್ಷಾಗೃಹದ ಸಂಚು ತಿಳಿದಾಗ ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುವ ಸಂಕೇತಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಸಿದನು. ಸುರಂಗ ತೋಡಿಸಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಪಾರುಮಾಡಿದನು. ಅವನ ನಿಷ್ಠೆ ಸದಾ ರಕ್ತಸಂಬಂಧಕ್ಕಲ್ಲ, ಧರ್ಮಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರ.
