Chapter 1 · Arjuna Viṣāda Yoga

47 verses

The Yoga of Arjuna's Grief. Arjuna surveys the Kurukshetra battlefield and recognizes grandfathers, teachers, uncles, brothers, sons, and beloved friends arrayed on both sides. He is overwhelmed — his limbs tremble, his mouth dries, his Gandiva bow slips from his hand. 'I see no good in killing my kinsmen in battle,' he tells Krishna. 'I do not desire victory, O Krishna, nor kingdoms nor pleasures.' He sinks into his chariot seat. The Gita begins not with answers, but with a human being in complete moral collapse — because that is the only honest starting point.
