Chapter 14 · Guṇatraya Vibhāga

गुणत्रयविभागयोग
27 verses

The Three Qualities (Gunas). All matter and all minds are governed by three qualities born from Nature (Prakriti): Sattva (purity, clarity, knowledge — it binds through happiness and knowledge), Rajas (passion, restlessness, desire — it binds through attachment to action), Tamas (inertia, darkness, ignorance — it binds through negligence, sleep, error). The entire Mahabharata can be read through this lens: Yudhishthira (Sattva), Arjuna (Sattva-Rajas), Bhima (Rajas), Duryodhana (Rajas-Tamas), Shakuni (Tamas). Liberation is transcending all three Gunas — becoming Trigunatita.
