Chapter 15 · Puruṣottama Yoga

20 verses

The Yoga of the Supreme Person. The cosmic Ashvattha tree (sacred fig) is described with roots above and branches below — roots representing Brahman/the Absolute; branches, the material world. 'Cut this firmly rooted tree with the sharp axe of non-attachment.' Two kinds of beings exist in creation: the perishable (all matter) and the imperishable (the unchanging soul). But beyond both is the Supreme Person (Purushottama) — who pervades and sustains all three worlds. 'I am beyond the perishable and higher than the imperishable — therefore I am known in the world and in the Vedas as Purushottama, the Supreme Person.'
