Chapter 5 · Karma Sanyāsa Yoga

29 verses

The Yoga of Renunciation. Both renunciation of action and yoga of action lead to liberation — but yoga of action (Karma Yoga) is superior because it is practical. The true renunciant is one who neither hates nor desires — not one who merely avoids action. The wise see the same self in a learned brahmin, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and an outcast. They have conquered the cycle of birth and death. The chapter introduces Brahma-nirvana: the extinguishing of ego-self into the infinite — liberation not as annihilation but as merger with the unlimited.
