Son of Bhima and the demoness Hidimbi. Half-human, half-rakshasa — he could fly, grow enormous, and use powerful illusions. His death forced Karna to expend his one-use divine Shakti weapon, saving Arjuna.
Rakshasas grow stronger at night — Day 14 was a night battle, one of the most intense of the war. Ghatotkacha grew to enormous size, rained boulders and weapons, and nearly single-handedly routed the Kaurava army. Duryodhana desperately pleaded with Karna to use his prized Shakti — Indra's divine weapon given to Karna in exchange for the Kavacha-Kundala. It was a one-time-use weapon Karna had been saving for Arjuna.
Karna released the Shakti against Ghatotkacha, who had grown the size of a mountain. It killed him — but the weapon was gone forever. When Krishna heard Ghatotkacha had fallen, he danced with joy. Arjuna was horrified — his own son's death celebrated. Krishna explained: 'Karna's Shakti could have killed you. Ghatotkacha's death has saved the Pandavas.' The rakshasa died knowing he was saving his father's brother.
ಭೀಮ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಕ್ಷಸಿ ಹಿಡಿಂಬೆಯ ಮಗ. ಅರ್ಧ ಮಾನವ, ಅರ್ಧ ರಾಕ್ಷಸ. ಅವನ ಮರಣವೇ ಕರ್ಣನ ಏಕಬಾರಿಯ ಶಕ್ತ್ಯಾಯುಧವನ್ನು ವ್ಯಯ ಮಾಡಿಸಿ ಅರ್ಜುನನನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿತು.
ರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರ ಬಲ ಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತದೆ. ಹದಿನಾಲ್ಕನೆಯ ದಿನದ ರಾತ್ರಿಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಘಟೋತ್ಕಚ ಪರ್ವತದಂತೆ ಬೆಳೆದು ಬಂಡೆಗಳ ಮಳೆಗರೆದನು — ಕೌರವ ಸೈನ್ಯ ಚದುರಿಹೋಯಿತು. ಹತಾಶನಾದ ದುರ್ಯೋಧನ ಕರ್ಣನನ್ನು ಬೇಡಿಕೊಂಡನು.
ಅರ್ಜುನನಿಗೆಂದೇ ಕಾಯ್ದಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ, ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಬಳಸಬಹುದಾದ ಇಂದ್ರನ ಶಕ್ತ್ಯಾಯುಧವನ್ನು ಕರ್ಣ ಘಟೋತ್ಕಚನ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಿಡಬೇಕಾಯಿತು. ಘಟೋತ್ಕಚ ಸತ್ತನು — ಆದರೆ ಆ ಅಸ್ತ್ರ ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾಗಿ ಮುಗಿಯಿತು. ಸುದ್ದಿ ಕೇಳಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಸಂತೋಷದಿಂದ ಕುಣಿದನು — 'ಅರ್ಜುನ ಈಗ ಸುರಕ್ಷಿತ.'
