The Three Divisions of Faith. Faith follows the Gunas: Sattvic persons worship the gods; Rajasic worship the powerful and wealthy (yakshas and rakshasas); Tamasic worship ghosts and spirits. Food, sacrifice, austerity, and charity are each of three kinds: Sattvic (pure, universal benefit), Rajasic (done for show or result), Tamasic (destructive or negligent). The chapter introduces the formula for valid spiritual action: actions performed without faith (shraddha) are 'Asat' — they bear no fruit here or beyond. The Om-Tat-Sat formula is described: the threefold designation of Brahman.

ಮೂರು ಬಗೆಯ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯ ವಿವೇಚನೆ. ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯೂ ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನೇ ಅನುಸರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ — ಸಾತ್ವಿಕರು ದೇವತೆಗಳನ್ನು, ರಾಜಸರು ಯಕ್ಷರಾಕ್ಷಸರನ್ನು, ತಾಮಸರು ಭೂತಪ್ರೇತಗಳನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆಹಾರ, ಯಜ್ಞ, ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮತ್ತು ದಾನ — ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದೂ ಮೂರು ಬಗೆ. ಸಾತ್ವಿಕ (ಶುದ್ಧ, ಸರ್ವಹಿತ), ರಾಜಸ (ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ ಅಥವಾ ಫಲಾಪೇಕ್ಷೆಗಾಗಿ), ತಾಮಸ (ವಿನಾಶಕಾರಿ ಅಥವಾ ಅಜಾಗರೂಕ). ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಕರ್ಮ 'ಅಸತ್' — ಇಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಫಲ ಕೊಡದು, ಪರಲೋಕದಲ್ಲೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. 'ಓಂ ತತ್ ಸತ್' — ಬ್ರಹ್ಮದ ತ್ರಿವಿಧ ನಾಮ.
