Chapter 3 · Karma Yoga

43 verses

The Yoga of Action. Arjuna asks: if knowledge is superior to action, why fight? Krishna explains that no one can remain without acting — even for a moment. The world is sustained by yajna (sacrifice/duty). 'Act as I do — without attachment, for the welfare of the world.' Perform your svadharma (own duty) even imperfectly rather than another's dharma perfectly. Krishna identifies desire and anger — born of the quality Rajas — as the enemy within: 'It is desire, it is anger born of Rajas — the all-devouring, the all-sinning enemy here — know this as the foe.'
