Prince of Gandhara and maternal uncle of the Kauravas. His enchanted dice and cunning strategy engineered the game that sent five million people to their deaths — all as calculated revenge.
One tradition holds that Shakuni's father and brothers were imprisoned and starved by Dhritarashtra's father (Vichitravirya / Bhishma's actions). Shakuni survived by eating the one grain of rice allotted to each prisoner — all gave him theirs to preserve the clan's avenger. His father instructed him to make dice from his own (the father's) backbone — the bone that always obeyed Shakuni. His entire life at Hastinapur was a long revenge plot.
Shakuni's genius was psychological manipulation. He knew Yudhishthira's addiction to dice and his kshatriya code — a king could not refuse a challenge. The dice obeyed Shakuni's call. Even knowing this, Yudhishthira could not stop. Shakuni orchestrated every step: the kingdom, the brothers, the humiliation of Draupadi. He achieved exactly what he planned — the destruction of the Kuru dynasty.
On Day 18, Sahadeva (the youngest Pandava) hunted down Shakuni. It was personal — Sahadeva had watched the dice game knowing Shakuni cheated and knowing what it would cost. He killed Shakuni in single combat, fulfilling a vow made on the day of the dice game.
