Born Krishnadvaipāyana to sage Parashara and Satyavati. Compiler of the four Vedas, author of the 18 Puranas, and the Mahābhārata itself — perhaps the single most prolific author in human history.
Vyasa dictated the entire Mahabharata (100,000 verses) to Lord Ganesha without pause. The agreement: Vyasa dictates without stopping; Ganesha writes only if he understands each verse first. Vyasa thus included deliberately complex verses (Ganesha would pause to comprehend, giving Vyasa time to compose the next verse). The result is the most intricate text ever created.
Through Niyoga (levirate), Vyasa fathered the three sons on whom the entire epic turns: Dhritarashtra (by Ambika — she closed her eyes, child born blind), Pandu (by Ambalika — she went pale, child born pale), Vidura (by a maid — she received calmly, child born perfectly wise). He thus fathered both Pandavas' and Kauravas' grandfathers.
